7 Tips To Get More Daily Exercise

Dec20th 2022

Did you know that 80 percent of the U.S. population doesn’t meet the Physical Activity Guidelines recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services? Millions of Americans are at risk of serious health consequences simply because they sit too much and move too little.

That information may not be shocking to you, especially if you are among the 80 percent! What might surprise you is how quickly and easily you can increase your daily activity level.

Mobile Therapy Services has compiled a list of seven simple tips from our in-home physical therapists for fitting in some much-needed extra exercise. If you need a physical tune-up to participate in these activities with ease, contact our clinic today!

7 ways to exercise more

1. Go for a bike ride.

Cycling works different muscles than walking, making it an excellent supplement to walking when you need to go a little further and faster. It also provides an excellent cardiovascular workout! So get that old bike out of the garage, clean it up, and take it for a spin.

2. Watch TV…while working out.

There’s nothing wrong with spending some quality time watching your favorite TV shows or movies – but you don’t have to spend all of those hours motionless on your couch. It’s bad for you, both physically and mentally.

Consider purchasing a stationary bike or treadmill to use while catching up on your stories. You’ll have just as much fun, but instead of lounging, you’ll be working out.

3. Consider using a standing desk.

Standing desks have become popular in the workplace for good reason.

Standing at your desk instead of sitting can help you avoid unwanted weight gain, regulate blood sugar levels after meals, relieve back pain, improve your mood and energy level, lower your risk of heart disease, and add years to your life. You might even discover that you get more work done! Ask your boss if they would be willing to invest in one for you.

4. Begin practicing yoga.

Physical activity isn’t always about running or jumping around at lightning speed. Yoga benefits both the body and the mind by relieving stress, stretching muscles, increasing range of motion, and assisting you in mastering your breathing.

A yoga class provides both structured learning and a positive social environment.

5. Participate in a new sport.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to find extra activity; it could simply take the form of new fun.

Have you ever thought about taking up tennis, golf, sailing, swimming, running, or a team sport such as soccer or softball? These sports provide a variety of physical benefits while also getting you moving.

6. Take your dog for a walk.

Have you ever been astounded by your dog’s boundless energy and endurance? Dogs enjoy going for walks, running, playing catch, and exploring new places.

Participate in these activities, and you’ll discover that your dog gives you a great workout.

7. Reduce the amount of time you spend driving.

Even for a quick trip to the mailbox or the corner store, many people automatically get into their cars. What if you walked for a few minutes instead of driving every day?

Walking may not seem like much of a workout, but it improves circulation, exercises your legs and feet, helps you lose weight, keeps your joints limber, and relieves stress.

Have you thought about athletic training?

Our in-home physical therapists can help you discover the benefits of athletic training. Among these are, but are not limited to:

  • Refocusing strengths. A physical therapist can assist you in focusing on areas of strength that you may not have considered. Many parts of the body interact with one another, and strengthening one can aid in the function of another. Rather than diving headfirst into a new activity, it makes sense to prepare your body to respond to the new form of stimulation by increasing muscular strength and range of motion.
  • Creating healthy habits. A physical trainer can help you achieve physical goals, but they can also help you achieve general health goals. Regular exercise, a well-balanced diet, and a focus on hydration, for example, are all essential for improving your physical fitness. A physical therapist is an excellent resource for increasing strength and muscle functionality because they can assist you in all aspects of your health and well-being.
  • Overcoming an injury. Physical therapy treatments are among the most effective ways to recover from an injury and find relief from pain. Each treatment is tailored to the needs of the individual and the severity of their injury, and includes exercises and strength-building activities that are specific to their recovery.
